Administrative/Biographical History
Martin Johnson Ekdahl emigrated from Sweden around 1888. He eventually settled in Polk County, Minnesota, and was married 15 February 1891 to Emma Swanson. Emma was born about 1865 in Sweden and was the foster daughter of P.E. Swanson of Northland Township, Polk County. The couple had one child, John William, born in November 1891. Emma died 15 May 1922, while John William died 5 March 1967. Martin Ekdahl appears to have died about 1894.

Scope and Contents: The Martin J. Ekdahl Ledger contains summary financial information from 1889 to 1911 with most entries in Swedish. The ledger was found in the home of his son, John William, after his death in 1967. The pages are copies and the owner of the original is unknown. A partial English translation along with footnotes was made by Patti Thureen, possibly as part of a class project at UND. After the death of Martin, his widow continued with entries until 1911.
