Abstract
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Helge Ederstrom Papers consist of materials mainly about the history of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of North Dakota (UND) from 1905 until 1983. Topics include the use of the new Medical Science building, animal for research, controversies in the Graduate Program, and advances in technology. There is a time line of the teachers and courses in the Physiology and Pharmacology from 1915 to 1980, and a listing of course changes over the years.
Also included in the collection are the notes and rough drafts that Ederstrom used to write A History of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1905-1977.
Collection Historical Note
Helge Ederstrom (Stern Elis Helge Ederström) was born February 28, 1908, in Torsås Parish, Kalmar County, Sweden, to Amandus Herman Ederström and Alma Jönsson. The family emigrated in 1912 and settled in Rockford, Illinois. Helge received his B.S. from Beloit College (Wisconsin) in 1937. After he obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University, he taught there and at the medical schools of the University of Missouri (1942-1947) and St. Louis University (1947-1952).
In 1952, Ederstrom came to the University of North Dakota, where he taught Physiology and Pharmacology. He received national recognition for his research in vascular medicine and surgery. He retired in 1977 and was named Professor Emeritus of Medicine. For the occasion of the UND centennial, Ederstrom wrote a departmental history titled A History of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1905-1977.
Ederstrom also authored scientific articles and received several awards for his research of the circulatory system. In 1973, he received the UND Medical School Outstanding Teacher Award, and was listed in American Men of Science and Who's Who in the Midwest. He was a member of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the American Physiological Society, and the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. Ederstrom was well known in the Midwest for his watercolor paintings of prairie scenes and local landscapes.
