Hallingdal is a rugged mountain valley in Norway, between Oslo and Bergen. Many people emigrated from this valley to the United States and Canada, especially during the 1800s.

The Hallinglag is an organization formed in 1907 by immigrants and their descendants. In 1910, the Hallinglag began collecting donations for the celebration of Norway's Constitutional Centennial in 1914. The funds were collected for the purpose of erecting monuments in each community in Hallingdal to remember those involved in the struggle for independence.
