Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Stuart McDonald Papers have been divided into three series as follows:
Series 1: Cartoons by Stuart McDonald, 1961-1968
Series 2: Cartoons by Other Cartoonists, 1923-2003
Series 3: Cartooning Correspondence Courses
All of Stuart McDonald's cartoons have been digitized, and can be viewed at the UND Scholarly Commons.
Collection Historical Note
"Stuart J. McDonald, 90 of Loveland died October 2, 2021. Born in Grand Forks, ND, March 15, 1931.
Stuart attended St. Mary’s grade school, Central High School and the University of North Dakota. He was Vice-President of McDonald’s Clothing in Grand Forks and was active in civic and church affairs.
Stuart married his high school sweetheart, Marceda Wright, in 1951. The couple had three children.
In the early sixty’s McDonald began a series of editorial cartoons which were published every Sunday in the Grand Forks Herald and subsequently reprinted in a number of other North Dakota daily and weekly newspapers. He won three Honor Medals from the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge for his cartoons.
McDonald was elected as a Republican to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1966 and 1968.
He was Chairman of the North Dakota Republican Campaign Committee in 1968. In 1973 McDonald left McDonald’s Clothing to join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Region VIII, Denver, as a Business and Industry Specialist in the Office of Public Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations. He returned to the private sector in 1981. From 1981 to 1986 he was Principal of Stuart McDonald and Associates, an Intergovernmental relations consulting firm in Denver. During this period, he did radio and television commercial work in the Denver market.
McDonald returned to North Dakota in 1986 as Chairman of the Jamestown/Stutsman County Business and Industrial Development effort. In 1990 he returned to Federal Service as a Public Affairs Specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Western Region, Denver. He retired from Federal Service in 2001. Marceda, his wife of fifty years, died that same year. In 2003 Stuart married Ann Pedrett in a private ceremony in Estes Park, Colorado. The couple moved to Newburgh, Indiana, in 2004, where he continued his political cartooning. The couple then moved to Loveland, CO in 2015, where Stuart began sculpting at the age of 85.
Stuart was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John; sisters Dona, Marge and Ruth; and his wife, Marceda. He is survived by his wife Ann, three children: Terri Ames (Luke Boll), Newburgh, IN, Greg, Anchorage, AK, and Andrea (Shaun) Shahmardian, Ft. Collins, CO; three step-sons: Troy Pedrett (Tiffany), Dacono, CO, Anthony Pedrett (Jeab), Cairo, Egypt and Ben Pendrett (Gina), Longmont, CO and nine grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Services were held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Loveland, CO on Thursday, October 9, 2021 at 10:30 a.m.
Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Grand Forks, ND at a future date."

- Series 1: Cartoons by Stuart McDonald, 1961-1968
The first series consists of editorial cartoons created by Stuart McDonald for the Grand Forks Herald and the North Dakotan from 1961 to 1968. Through his cartoons, McDonald explored a myriad of local, state, national and international issues. The first box contains his original, hand-drawn cartoons, which measure 11x14 inches. The second box contains the printed cartoons which were clipped by McDonald, mounted on heavy paper, and arranged chronologically in three ring binders. McDonald also noted if these cartoons were featured in any other publication, if the cartoons received any awards, or if the original cartoon was given as a gift. McDonald also included any letters to the editor regarding his cartoons.

- The second series consists of Stuart McDonald's personal collection of cartooning books. Included are compilations of a single cartoonist's work, anthologies containing cartoons by various artists, and biographies of distinguished cartoonists. Many of the books have been inscribed to McDonald by the authors. Also included are twenty one framed cartoons dating from 1923 to 1988. Many are originals, some are prints or posters, and most have been inscribed by the artist.

- Series 3: Cartooning Correspondence Courses
The final series includes lessons from two correspondence cartooning programs. McDonald participated in the Famous Artists Cartoon Course from 1960 to 1962; included are lesson books, McDonald's coursework, and feedback from the instructors. The second correspondence cartooning program is the Art Instruction Schools Courses in Advertising Art, Illustrating, Painting, and Cartooning. There is no indication that McDonald participated in this program.
