Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Vernice Aldrich Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, programs, pamphlets, minutes, reports, articles, manuscripts, periodicals, newspaper clippings, and photographs, primarily 1923-1947. The contents are arranged chronologically.

Correspondence pertains mainly to the North Dakota Wheat Growers Association, Wesley College, and the Psi Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega. In addition, there are folders for the Army Air Force program at UND, and agricultural bulletins and reports. Personal papers include photographs and Christmas cards. There are also articles, manuscripts, and poetry by Aldrich about North Dakota history, agriculture, and cooperatives.

Other contents include assorted brochures, booklets, and newspaper articles. Additionally, several folders pertain to UND and Wesley College include materials on Panhellenic, the Philymnian Club, and the University Club. Presidential campaign and inauguration materials include pamphlets and flyers on the campaigns of Frank O. Lowden and Herbert Hoover, and press releases issued by Vernice, who covered the 1929 Washington DC inauguration. Lastly, a ledger book for the Aldrich Elevator Company (Kempton, ND) contains stock certificates and records (1902-1903).

Collection Historical Note

Born July 27, 1901, on a farm near Kempton, North Dakota, Vernice was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar M. Aldrich. Her parents farmed and owned the Aldrich Elevator Company in Kempton, where they were pioneers. Vernice attended Central High School in Grand Forks and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1923 with a B.A. in English. She earned an M.A. in Geography from UND in 1924, and a diploma in voice from Wesley College in 1935. While at UND, she was affiliated with Chi Omega, a social sorority, and with the following academic societies: Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Alpha Pi Zeta, and Mortar Board. From 1925 to 1930, she served as editor of Wheat Grower, the monthly periodical of the North Dakota Wheat Growers Association. In 1931, she became the registrar for Wesley College and was a faculty member at UND during World War II. Vernice authored numerous articles about North Dakota politics, agriculture, and history. She was active in several Grand Forks clubs: Business and Professional Women’s Club, Quota Club, YWCA, and the Thursday Music Club, for which she served as president. She was also active in local Democratic party politics. She died in a Grand Forks hospital January 25, 1959.
