Collection Historical Note
The North Dakota Association for the Education of Young Children was formed at an organizational meeting on May 1, 1976 in Mayville, North Dakota. The group was officially certified as an affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children in March 1977.
David Wright, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at Mayville State College, and Maurice Lucas, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of North Dakota, were both instrumental in the formation of the group.
The purpose of the association, as stated in their constitution, is "to serve and act on behalf of the needs, rights, and education of all young children". They seek to accomplish these goals by working for the passage of legislation beneficial to young children, such as establishing government funding for kindergartens in North Dakota schools, by conducting workshops and conferences designed to provide information on issues related to the care, development, and needs of young children, and by holding events, such as the Week of the Young Child, that draw attention to children's needs.
