- "Purchased in California on a trip. It had an even longer skirt, but Mother wasn't comfortable with the new look so she shortened it. Note the interesting use of selvagee on lapel. Considering how nicely the jacket is tailored it is surprising that the skirt was not lined. With its padded shoulders and classic lines, this suit would be wearable today. I nearly kept it, but it is too short waisted and large in the bust and waist."

- Item 9: 1934, S40, H1: Play suit with matching hat. Donated by Barbara Hansen.
- "This play suit was worn to the community picnic on the banks of the Sheyenne River in the summer of 1934. According to the snapshot, I got very dirty. According to the baby book, I embarrassed my mother and amused the menfolk with my command of barnyard English--learned of course, by hanging around the barns, And egged on, no doubt, by three teen aged brothers who thought it funny to teach the baby naughty words. What I remember about this picnic was losing my mother. (My brother found her). The garment was too big, so it probably was worn again the next year."

Most of my pre-school play clothes were made by older cousins, aunts--anyone but my mother who hated sewing. She mended because she had to. All the little dresses were made with matching underpants right through the first grade. Sunday dresses were generally store bought, Cinderella frocks from the Fair Store in Valley City."

The pattern was given to my mother by a neighbor who had used it during her pregnancies in the summers of 1927, 1930, and 1931. I presume it was pinned in front. Some older patterns show snaps and ties. Since it has lace trim, it must have been her one good dress for the summer. I was born in October and delivered by a doctor at the home of a midwife in Valley City. In those days one most certainly did not photograph pregnant ladies, so I really cannot say for certain how this dress was used or fastened together."
