Scope and Contents of the Materials

The first box mainly consists of financial records related to military training on the UND campus during World War II. There are also Air Force ROTC Records consisting of eight scrapbooks (oversize boxes 4-5) and subject files (box 2). The scrapbooks document activities of the 615th Wing (Donald C. Jones Squadron) including Angel Flight, a female auxiliary group associated with the Arnold Air Society. In addition, there are eleven scrapbooks primarily documenting activities of the Army ROTC (oversize boxes 1-3). The scrapbooks contain assorted newspaper clippings, publications, and photographs, and include information on the Princess Platoon.

Collection Historical Note

Military training on campus was required for male students in the early years of UND. Regular military instruction began about 1890 as part of the department of military science. This was discontinued in 1904. During World War I, the Student Army Training Corps was created. It was short-lived, having only been active for about three months. On April 15, 1919, the Army ROTC unit was instituted at UND as a result of the National Defense Act of 1916. An Air Force ROTC unit was created after World War II.
