Abstract
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Alan Fletcher Papers contain three published reports and memorabilia. The reports are:
"Investigations Selection, Design Construction and Initial Operation of the Wahleach Fish-Spawning Channel" (1957)
"Investigation of Water Reservoir Lining Materials for Cold Regions Use" (1962)
"Solution of the Non-Linear Equations Governing Flood Waves in Natural Channels by the Method of Characteristics" (1965)
The collection also includes a 1939 mathematical manual used by Fletcher, the 1981 Elwyn F. Chandler Award given to Fletcher, and a collection of rings and pens. Also Included is a detailed inventory of the reports and a photograph of Alan and Irene Fletcher.
Collection Historical Note
Dr. Alan Fletcher was named Dean of the School of Engineering and Mines at the University of North Dakota (UND) in 1969. His main interests were hydraulic engineering and water resources development. Dr. Fletcher created Project Lignite, a foundation for UND research and water resources development. He oversaw the completion of the Upson building, increased enrollment, and added Master's Degree programs to the School of Engineering. Dr. Fletcher was supportive of young women who were interested in engineering, and oversaw the creation of the Women in Engineering program in 1974. He retired in 1989 and has a wife and four children.
