Collection Historical Note
The New School was started in February 1968 with a focus on open education, a teaching trend then sweeping the nation. The 1965 North Dakota legislature established a committee to evaluate the state's schools. Under the chairmanship of Dr. Kent G. Alm, the committee recommended the formation of the New School at UND. Throughout its four year tenure, New School operated as an experimental college component at UND. The College of Education merged with New School to form the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in 1972.
The Center for Research in Vocational and Technical Education (CRVTE), also known as the Research Coordinating Unit, was established in the College of Education in 1965. It received grant funding through the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare as a result of the Vocational Education Act of 1963. During its existence, CRVTE conducted or provide support for studies related to vocational training in North Dakota. Various reports were prepared from these studies.
