Dr. James Grassick was born June 29, 1850, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. His childhood was spent in Ontario, Canada. At age thirty-five, he graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago. Soon after receiving his degree, Grassick established a medical practice in Buxton, North Dakota. In 1905 he moved to Grand Forks, where he became active in the campaign to improve public health. Two years later, he was appointed State Superintendent of Public Health. Grassick helped found the North Dakota Anti-Tuberculosis Association in 1909 and served as its first President. In 1917, Grassick was appointed University of North Dakota physician, a position he held for many years. He was elected to the Presidency of the North Dakota State Medical Association in 1923.
