Tarkel Danielson Ose Papers, 1875-1922
Tarkel Danielson Ose was born February 20, 1849 and baptized March 2, 1849 in Bygland Parish in the region of Setesdal, Norway. He immigrated to the United States in 1872 with other family members, initially living in Stearns County, Minnesota. He eventually settled in Polk County, Minnesota, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Ose married Sigrid (Sarah) Bjornsdatter Skaare in 1872. Skaare’s family had been neighbors of the Ose family in Norway prior to their immigration to the United States in 1862. In addition to farming in Bygland Township, Ose managed a grain elevator along the Red River for the Red River Grain Company. Ose assumed the role of a community leader in Bygland Township, active in numerous civic, political, and religious (Lutheran) organizations. In 1920, Ose and his wife joined the National Non-Partisan League (NPL). They had six children; Anna, Josephine, Daniel, Thora, Bennie, and Regina. Ose died February 11, 1926, while his wife died July 12, 1927. They are buried in Bygland Lutheran Cemetery (North).
