Third District Medical Auxiliary Records, 1948-1999
The American Medical Association (AMA) Auxiliary is a non-profit, volunteer service organization consisting of physicians’ spouses. The group had previously been known as the Woman's Auxiliary to the American Medical Association. The primary objective of the organization is to improve the health and welfare of local communities through programs created after identifying specific community needs. Each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia has a state organization, which is further divided into districts.
In North Dakota, the Third District Medical Auxiliary was founded in 1948 and centered in Grand Forks. The Auxiliary is involved in many fund raising, education, legislation and community service projects. Some of their major projects include support of the Medical Student Loan Fund at the University of North Dakota, the AMA Educational Research Foundation (AMA-ERF) and numerous other local and regional charities. Members of the Auxiliary have also volunteered in area hospitals in many different capacities.
In 1992, the name of the group was changed to the Third District Medical Alliance.
