Vera Facey Papers
Vera Facey was born on June 6, 1909 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She graduated from Pictou Academy in Nova Scotia in 1928 with highest honors, for which she was presented the Governor General’s medal. She taught in Canadian public schools for several years before completing her B.S. degree at King’s College, Dalhousie University in 1936. She obtained M.A. and Ph.D degrees from the University of Toronto in 1940 and 1946. Her Ph.D dissertation won the Wintercorbyn Prize for “research in botany of most use in agriculture or medicine” in 1946.
Facey joined the Biology faculty of UND in 1947 as an Assistant Professor. She became the only botanist on a three-member faculty, and remained so until 1962. She taught General Botany, Microtechnique, Ecology, Systematic Botany, and Plant Morphology, in addition to the General Biology course. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1954 and to Professor in 1962. She retired in 1979 with the rank of Emeritus Professor. Dr. Facey also served as President of the North Dakota Academy of Science in 1960-61, President of the UND Chapter of the Sigma Xi, and a member of the UND Chapter of the American Association of University Professors.
Vera Facey died December 15, 1985 in Grand Forks.
