Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Grand Forks County World War II Service Record Books document the history of soldiers from Grand Forks County in World War II. The rosters include soldiers born and raised in Grand Forks County, as well as soldiers residing in the county at the time of entry into the military. Each entry contains details such as date of birth, career, physical description, service unit, awards and citations, date of discharge, and muster out pay. In most instances, the information provided is in excess of the information presented in Register of North Dakota Veterans: World War II, 1941-1945, and Korean Conflict, 1950-1953.
Before their deposit in the Department of Special Collections, the record books were housed in the Veterans Service Office in Grand Forks. The record books may or may not be related to publication of Register of North Dakota Veterans: World War II, 1941-1945, and Korean Conflict, 1950-1953. The record books date from the time immediately following the end of World War II, while the Register of North Dakota Veterans was not published until 1968. Another possible origin could be the DD214 form, filed by most discharged veterans with the county clerk in their county of residence. This form lists much of the same information presented in the roster books.
