In September 1980, the Arc of North Dakota brought a class action lawsuit againt the state of North Dakota in Federal District Court. The lawsuit regarded the constitutional rights of, and care provided to, the intellectually and developmentally disabled in state administered facilities at the Grafton State School and the San Haven State Hospital. When the case was closed in 1996, it brought about fundamental and long-lasting change.
