Scope and Contents of the Materials
Collection Historical Note
The Sons of Norway is a fraternal and ethnic heritage organization comprised primarily of North Americans of Norwegian descent. Organized by Norwegian immigrants January 16, 1895, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for the purpose of fostering mutual aid within the Norwegian-American community. Gyda Varden Lodge was organized as Varden Lodge in 1903, the 21st lodge of Sons of Norway. It is the oldest lodge in District IV. It merged in 1951 with Gyda
It continues to be one of the largest membership lodges in District IV.
