Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Gyda Varden Lodge #21, Sons of Norway Records, 1903-1983, consist of materials related to the Gyda Varden Lodge and District IV of the Sons of Norway, as well as the Daughters of Norway. Records related to the Gyda Varden Lodge include meeting minutes, membership information, financial records, and miscellaneous files.

The District IV materials largely consist of meeting minutes, although a small amount of financial information and some photographs are included. Additional materials regarding District IV can be found in OGLMC 1491: District IV, Sons of Norway Records

Also included are meeting minutes for the Daughters of Norway, 1905-1951.

Collection Historical Note

The Sons of Norway is a fraternal and ethnic heritage organization composed primarily of North Americans of Norwegian descent. Its stated mission is to "promote, preserve, and cherish a lasting appreciation of the heritage and culture of Norway and other Nordic countries while growing soundly as a fraternal benefit society and offering maximum benefits to its members." Organized by Norwegian immigrants on January 16, 1895, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for the purpose of fostering mutual aid within the Norwegian-American community, the society now has four hundred local lodges spread throughout the United States, Canada, and Norway. In addition, Sons of Norway also offers life insurance benefits to its members, as well as various academic and cultural scholarships designed to promote familiarity with Norwegian language and culture.
