Scope and Contents of the Materials

The A.C. Townley Papers consist of photocopied material related to Townley's 1919 sedition trial in Jackson, Minnesota. Also included is one folder of general newspaper clippings regarding Townley and the NPL, as well as one folder of Kansas newspaper clippings regarding the debates between A. C. Townley and William Langer in 1921.

Three copies of a 1956 Townley phonograph entitled “The Communist Russian New Deal Game to Bankrupt the USA” were separated and placed on the shelves near the Audio Tape Collection. The phonographs record Townley’s musings on the history of Communism and Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal.

Accruals: Additions: 1981 (Acc.#81-733); purchased from the Federal Records Center, Kansas City, Missouri, in January 1985 (Acc.#85-1365); Bruce Gjovig, Grand Forks, North Dakota, on August 10, 1995.

Access Restrictions: Open for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections.

Acquisition Method: Donation; the acquisition records are unavailable.

Separated Materials:

One microfiche copy of proceedings from the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota, In the Matter of Townley Brothers, Bankrupts, 1917, was placed in the Family History Room, along with all other microfiche.

Also separated was a phonograph recording of a 1956 Townley speech entitled “The Communist Russian New Deal Game to Bankrupt the USA.” The phonograph was placed on the shelves near the Audio Tape Collection. The speech was also recorded on an audio cassette, which was placed in the Audio Tape Collection and numbered #1699.
