This file contains material related to a historical discrepancy in the S-2 Journal entry for January 7, 1944. The discrepancy regards the actions of the 1st Battalion of the 164th Infantry during a fire-fight with Japanese troops during the Bougainville Campaign.  Anthony Hannel led the patrol that day and he has included a 2004 letter in which he recorded his recollections of the event.  Major differences regard the amount of time the fire-fight lasted, as well as the number of enemy troops killed or wounded. There were also differences in the amount of friendly casualties, as well as how far the patrol advanced before meeting Japanese resistance.

“Charles T. "Chuck" Bell, age 98, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2021, in Newport Beach. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles E. and Hennrietta Bell; 3 sisters, Theone Moise, Emogene Larson, and Florence Bisbee; and one daughter, Diana Bell. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Phyllis Bell; two daughters, Cindy (Richard) Foullon and Anita (Robert) Zantos; two sons, Charles (Margaret) Bell and Matthew (Terry) Bell; one brother, Al (Mary) Bell; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews as well. Chuck was born in Sheldon, North Dakota, and raised in nearby Enderlin. As a member of "the greatest generation," he was an icon of the era when our Nation recovered from the ravages of World War II. For a short time, he was the oldest living member of the legendary 164th Infantry Regiment that played a vital role in the capture of Guadalcanal from the Japanese Imperial Army in 1942-43. After the war, he settled in Fullerton where his family resided. He attended Fullerton JC and Stanford University after which he began a long and successful career in the construction industry, first as a building inspector, concrete salesman, and for the majority of his career as an Orange County concrete contractor of curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and tilt-up buildings. Chuck golfed, played the French horn, loved baseball, and was a long time member of Christ Church by the Sea Newport Beach. Chuck (aka Hookie) was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and son always up for a game of cards, and made friends wherever he went. He was the rock of our family and will be missed by all.” Source: Orange County Register, 8 May 2021

Bell served in the 164th Infantry Regiment from February 1941 to August 1945 and played the French Horn in the regimental band. Al Bell, brother of Charles, donated six scrapbooks and photo albums to the Department of Special Collections in October 2020 (2020-3425). The first item is a small binder full of letters, photographs, and documents concerning Charles T. Bell. The first photograph album is blue and has a boat on the cover with the words “tough war” and contains photographs of the 164th infantry band performing various activities. The second photo album is blue with a boat and a Fiji sticker. It contains portraits of band members playing their instruments and spending time with the local Fiji population. The first scrapbook is large with a brown leather cover. It contains print material concerning the 164th infantry band. The second scrapbook is large with a green leather cover. It contains print material concerning the 164th Infantry Band, as well as the Pacific theater of the Second World War. The third photo album is blue with a boat on the cover and the words 164th infantry. It contains miscellaneous photos and prints about the 164th infantry.
