John Erle Grinnell was born on July 10, 1896, in North Dakota. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1921 and received graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota and Stanford University. He spent a long career in education at both the high school and college levels. He died on February 12, 1990, in San Luis Obispo, California and is buried in Cooperstown, North Dakota.
